Skateboarding Doesn’t Need a Stadium
11 August 2026 | Oni Ramp Co.
There’s a skate jam happening in Gillingham today.
No massive arena. No Olympic medals. No million-pound prize purse.
Just people turning up to skate.
And that matters.
Skateboarding has grown massively. It’s an Olympic sport now. Britain has national championships, international competitors and a pathway leading towards LA 2028.
But none of that replaces the local skatepark.
Because that’s where skateboarding actually starts.
It starts with someone standing on a board for the first time.
It’s the kid watching somebody clear something they’ve been too scared to try.
It’s getting a tip from a skater you’ve never met before.
It’s trying the same trick over and over again until suddenly — somehow — you land it.
That’s why local jams are important.
Today’s Gillingham Skatepark Jam is part of a wider calendar of grassroots events happening around the UK. More jams are already scheduled for this Saturday in places including Coleford, Epsom and Buckingham.
These aren’t just competitions.
They give people a reason to turn up, meet other skaters and actually use the spaces their communities have.
And those spaces shouldn’t be taken for granted.
Skateparks need people riding them.
Local events need people supporting them.
Independent skate shops and brands need people backing them.
Most importantly, the next generation needs somewhere to start.
Oni Ramp is still at the beginning of its own story.
We’re not going to pretend we’ve been part of skateboarding for twenty years.
We haven’t.
We’re building something new, learning as we go and trying to create a brand that earns its place rather than simply sticking a skate graphic on a T-shirt and calling itself a skate company.
That means paying attention to what is happening at ground level.
The sessions.
The local parks.
The small competitions.
The people falling over, getting back up and having another go.
Because skateboarding doesn’t begin under stadium lights.
It begins at the local park.
